The New York Mets wasted no time replacing two-time Cy Young winner Jacob deGrom.
Just days after their former ace signed with the Texas Rangers, the Mets went ahead and plucked an ace out of Texas by signing Justin Verlander to a two-year, $86 million deal on Monday. Verlander is coming off a superb season where he returned to form after missing last season following Tommy John surgery. He took home his third Cy Young Award, while also leading the Houston Astros to their second World Series win in franchise history. Now in Queens, he will be reunited with Max Scherzer, his teammate from their Detroit Tigers days. If both Scherzer and Verlander can stay relatively healthy going forward, they will form a 1-2 punch atop the Mets rotation that’s as good as any in MLB, one that could easily help them win the franchise’s first World Series since 1986.
Which brings us to today’s quiz of the day. Since 1900, a pitcher has reached the vaunted 300-strikeout mark on just 38 occasions. The Mets now have two on their team. So with that in mind, how many of these flame-throwing hurlers can you name in five minutes?
